SAN XOAN represents a group of traditional local pear varieties common in Spain. The variety name is due to the ripening period of the fruits, which occurs around the time of the Saint John festival at the end of June.
Trees of this type are long-lived and capable of reaching a height of 2 to 6 meters, in some cases up to 10 meters. The fruits are small in size, with firm, juicy, crisp white flesh and a sweet taste.
This variety is the result of folk selection and possesses broad genetic diversity. It is unrelated to modern columnar pear varieties that may appear in sources under similar names.
