The variety is a chance seedling discovered in the 1880s in the vicinity of the town of Vienne in France. The tree is characterized by moderate vigor and a broad pyramidal or semi-open crown. The fruits ripen in late August to early September and are consumed fresh or used in cooking.
The fruit flesh is juicy, melting, with a characteristic buttery texture. The shelf life of the fruits is short. The variety is sensitive to frost during flowering and requires wind-protected sites. Poor compatibility with quince rootstocks is noted, therefore the use of an interstock or a pear rootstock is recommended.
