The variety was bred by William Saunders around 1887 in Canada by selection from seedlings of the Naples variety. The plant was characterized by large berries with firm skin.

In modern blackcurrant breeding, the name "Climax" appears in the pedigrees of other varieties, for example, in the origin of the Polish variety Bona. In scientific research on phytopathology, the variety is noted as susceptible to infectious variegation.
