The variety is a vigorous, large shrub. The berries are formed large and collected in long clusters. The variety was presumably obtained as a bud mutation of the Baldwin variety.

The plant is extremely susceptible to the blackcurrant reversion virus; many samples were historically completely infected with this virus. The variety is also characterized by particular susceptibility to gall mites and a tendency to exhibit symptoms of infectious variegation, accompanied by yellowing of the leaves and the appearance of a net pattern on the veins.

In modern breeding and scientific practice, this variety is used primarily as genetic material for study within a collection repository.
