The plant has a compact habit with vertically growing stems, reaching a height of 2–3 meters and a width of 1–1.5 meters. The foliage has an intricate appearance due to its deeply dissected shape and dark purple, almost black, color.

Flowering occurs in early summer; flowers are pale pink with a lemon scent, gathered in umbels. The fruits are shiny black-purple berries. Cross-pollination with other Sambucus varieties is required for fruit set.

The variety is frost-hardy and suitable for cultivation in containers or as an accent plant. The plant possesses a specific foliage odor that repels deer and rabbits. All parts of the plant may be toxic in a raw state.
