The plant forms large roots 25–30 cm long. The roots have a cylindrical shape and are covered with a dark, almost black skin, while the flesh inside is white and tender. The variety is characterized by high culinary qualities and is noted as being less bitter compared to other Scorzonera varieties.
Cultivated as an annual plant. Sowing is recommended in the spring. The variety is demanding regarding soil depth and structure: deep-tilled, loose, stone-free soils are necessary to obtain high-quality, straight roots, as roots may deform in heavy or stony soils.
The plant is sensitive to organic matter applied immediately before sowing, which can lead to root branching.
