Blåpotatis is not a single breeding variety, but a collection of landraces and local clones preserved in gene banks. Various accessions with common morphological traits, often having regional synonyms, may belong to this group.
Most representatives of this group are characterized as starchy varieties, often possessing a specific or bitter taste. Tuber flesh varies from light to intense purple. These heirloom forms have not undergone modern breeding, therefore they are characterized by low or unstable yield, as well as a lack of industrial tuber uniformity and high disease resistance.
