The Eesterling (Eersteling) variety is used in agronomic and phytopathological research as a standard variety for assessing disease resistance. The Rode Eesterling variety is distinguished by smooth red skin, light yellow flesh, and average yield, and is suitable for culinary processing.
In scientific publications, the variety is described as susceptible to late blight and sensitive to a number of pathotypes of potato wart (Synchytrium endobioticum). It is also used as an indicator in the identification of viral pathotypes, in particular PVY. The Rode Eesterling variety possesses moderate resistance to scab.
