The Dom Dinis variety belongs to the early-maturing group of plants. It is part of a series of varieties whose breeding is aimed at adaptation to various soil and climatic conditions of the Mediterranean region, including acidic, poor, and poorly drained soils.

The plant is traditionally used as a pasture forage crop. The variety is classified as the species Trifolium subterraneum L., while in a number of publications it is also associated with the subspecies Trifolium subterraneum ssp. brachycalycinum.
