The variety Howard was obtained by crossing the varieties Tallarook and Northam First Early. The plant has a prostrate growth habit with pubescent blue-green leaves marked by a characteristic light crescent. The flowers are white with pink stripes. Flowering begins in mid-September, with the variety demonstrating high variability in flowering dates due to its vernalization requirements.
The variety was selected for resistance to subterranean clover stunt virus. The agricultural value of the crop is limited by a high formononetin content, which causes estrogenic activity and can negatively affect sheep fertility. The variety is capable of recovering after frosts and forming seeds in the soil, but is inferior to modern varieties in resistance to clover scorch.
