The variety is intended for use as functional raw material in the food industry due to its high content of biologically active substances. The black color of the grain is due to a genetic combination of genes responsible for the purple pericarp and the blue aleurone layer.
The grain possesses an extremely high level of anthocyanins, with values almost twice those of varieties with blue or purple grain. The variety is also distinguished by an increased total antioxidant capacity.
