The Buck Poncho variety is characterized by a specific composition of high-molecular-weight glutenin subunits, including 2*, 7+8* and 5+10, which determines its baking potential. The plant has been actively used in breeding programs in Latin American countries, particularly in Brazil.
In genetic studies, the variety was considered in the context of the presence of leaf rust resistance genes, including the Lr11 gene. The variety was also studied for variability of loci responsible for phenotypic traits and wax bloom characteristics.
