Martinella is a traditional local form of wheat adapted to the specific soil and climatic conditions of Sicily. Unlike modern breeding lines, this variety possesses high genetic variability and lower uniformity.

Currently, the variety is being studied in the context of protein composition, which determines product quality, and is being researched for its suitability for malting in brewing. Industrial cultivation using intensive technologies is not typical for this landrace.
