The variety is a hybrid of Japanese and Siberian elm. The tree reaches a height of 12–15 meters and has a wide funnel-shaped or vase-shaped crown. The leaves are narrowly elliptic, dark green with serrated margins; new growth may have a reddish tint. The bark is light gray, becoming dark gray and furrowed with age.
The tree is fast-growing and frost-hardy, capable of tolerating urban conditions and air pollution. It possesses high resistance to Dutch elm disease. Disadvantages include wood brittleness at maturity, sensitivity to wind damage, a tendency for uneven foliage distribution, and susceptibility to infestation by the elm leaf beetle.
