The Nigula variety was selected between 1966 and 1972 at the Nigula Nature Reserve in Estonia as part of a program to domesticate Vaccinium oxycoccos. The plant belongs to the species Vaccinium oxycoccos and is not a North American large-fruited cranberry.
The variety is intended for cultivation on specialized plantations and is adapted to the climatic conditions of Estonia, the Baltic states, and the non-chernozem zone of Russia. It possesses high winter hardiness and the ability to grow in conditions of excessive moisture.
