The variety is characterized by vigorous vine growth with a semi-erect habit. The leaves are five-lobed with medium to high density pubescence on the underside, which, together with the brownish-red color of the berries, gives the variety its name. The bunches are medium-sized, conical, and range from medium-dense to dense. The berries are medium-sized, round or slightly oval, dark blue with a waxy bloom, and have juicy, crisp flesh.

The variety has a late ripening period and late bud break. It is sensitive to grey mold, powdery mildew, downy mildew, and is also prone to shatter and millerandage. It prefers poor, warm, and well-lit soils; short pruning is recommended. Wines from this variety are noted for their moderate color, balance, and complex aromatic profile with fruity and floral notes.
