The variety originates from northwestern Spain, on the border with Portugal, where it is also known as Alfrocheiro Preto. Genetic studies confirm its significance for Iberian grape varieties. The plant forms small clusters with small, dark-skinned berries and demonstrates resistance to gray mold.

Wine variety with low yield, which is limited in vineyards to 2500–4000 kg per hectare to ensure berry quality. It is used both for creating single-varietal wines and in blends with Juan García, Rufete, and Tempranillo varieties. The resulting wine is characterized by an intense color and pronounced aromas of forest berries.
