The César variety, also known as César Noir, Romain, Romano, Picargniot, and Gros Monsieur, is an ancient wine grape variety. Genetically, it is the result of a natural cross between Pinot noir and Argant varieties.

The variety is characterized by a late ripening period and high growth vigor. It is sensitive to frosts due to early bud burst and is susceptible to downy mildew. The berries of the variety have a dark color and thick skin.

The technical purpose of the grape is for the production of wines with a high aging potential. In winemaking, the variety is used as an auxiliary component in blends, most often in combination with Pinot noir to enhance the structure and color of the beverage.
