The variety is an ancient local plant distributed in the Somontano area. The name Cojón de Gato has a number of synonyms, such as Cojón de Mico, Cojón de Medico, Button Cat, and Pito de Gato. In literature, it may be mentioned in connection with other varieties, however, it is considered an independent variety, the berry shape of which resembles the anatomical features of a cat.

The grape is used in winemaking, mainly in blends with Merlot and Syrah varieties. The addition of this variety to a blend contributes to the formation of the wine's texture and freshness, introducing fruity notes and slight astringency. Detailed information on agrotechnical characteristics and disease resistance is absent in open sources.
