The variety is of French origin from the Savoy region and areas between the Rhône and Isère river valleys. It is an ancient heirloom variety with more than 60 synonyms, including Corbeau in France, Bonarda in Argentina and Charbono in California. Genetic studies have disproven its relationship to the Italian variety Dolcetto.
The plant possesses moderate growth vigor and a late ripening period, requiring a long growing season. Clusters are medium or above medium in size, cylindro-conical and moderately dense. Berries are dark blue in color, round, juicy, with thick skin and abundant bloom.
The variety is a wine grape. Wines made from it possess soft tannins, moderate acidity and aromas of blackberry, plum, black cherry, violet and licorice. It is used both for monovarietal wines and in blends to improve texture and provide fruity nuances.
