The variety is autochthonous to France and originates from the northern part of the Ardèche region. It is characterized as difficult to cultivate, showing high sensitivity to fungal diseases, which led to the almost complete disappearance of plantings after the phylloxera epidemic.

Wines from this variety have a light ruby color, elevated acidity, and a moderate alcohol level. The aromatics include notes of red and black fruits, black pepper, as well as characteristic rustic hints of leather and meat. The fruit ripening period is medium or late.
