The plant has above-average vigor and belongs to mid-season ripening varieties, reaching technical maturity in mid-to-late September. Leaves are medium-sized, slightly or moderately dissected, 3- or 5-lobed. Clusters are usually small, cylindrical-conical in shape, and not very dense. Berries are medium-sized, round, dark blue, almost black in color, and covered with a thick bloom.

The variety is sensitive to late spring frosts due to early bud break and has a frost resistance of approximately -22°C. Resistance to fungal diseases such as downy mildew and powdery mildew is assessed as medium or below medium, which necessitates regular protection of plantings.

Wines from Dunkelfelder are characterized by a saturated color, fruity notes of cherry and red berries, and a pronounced body. The variety is used both in the production of varietal wines and as a blending component to enhance the color of other wines.
