The variety is autochthonous to the Minho region in Portugal and is cultivated in Galicia, Spain. It belongs to the early-ripening varieties; the vines are vigorous, and the flower is perfect. Leaves are medium-sized, five-lobed, slightly dissected, with light pubescence on the underside.

Bunches are large, conical, and winged. The berries have thin skin, a dark blue-red hue, and non-pigmented flesh. The variety is adapted to humid and windy conditions and is characterized by moderate disease resistance.

Wines from this variety are noted for high acidity, low tannin content, and moderate alcohol. The aromatic profile is dominated by notes of red berries, flowers, and herbs. The name may encompass several different varieties or sub-varieties, including Espadeiro Tinto and Espadeiro Mole.
