The variety is indigenous and considered native to the upper Durance valley. Its shoots are characterized by an upright growth habit, and mature leaves have three to five lobes. The black-colored berries are characterized by a slightly elongated shape. The variety belongs to the mid-season maturity category and is characterized by high yield.

The plant possesses drought tolerance and can be successfully cultivated at altitudes up to 1000 meters above sea level. At the same time, the variety is highly susceptible to gray mold (Botrytis cinerea). Currently, Espanenc is considered a rare variety at risk of extinction, for which special preservation measures are being taken.
