The term Lambrusco unites a group of related grape varieties of the Vitis vinifera L. family, historically grown in the Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy regions. The varieties belong to the industrial/wine-making category and are used to create a wide range of red, rosé, and white wines, including still and sparkling.
The characteristics of the varieties within the group differ significantly. For example, Lambrusco di Sorbara is distinguished by late ripening, small loose clusters, and resistance to rot and frost. Lambrusco Maestri also ripens late, possesses larger clusters, but is sensitive to fungal diseases and frost. Lambrusco Grasparossa is adapted to hilly terrain and specific soil types.
