The variety is the result of an interspecific cross of the Mondeuse blanche and Tressot noir varieties. It was traditionally cultivated in the Alpine region of France and was historically known in Switzerland as Rouge de Diolly.

The vine is characterized by vigorous growth and high productivity with a semi-erect shoot habit. It is an early-ripening variety, susceptible to downy mildew, less frequently affected by powdery mildew, and prone to flower abortion.

Clusters are small to medium, compact, and often winged. Berries are medium-sized, ellipsoid or round in shape, with moderately thick skin and juicy flesh. The variety is used for the production of wines with intense color and high tannin content.
