ActiveVitis vinifera L. · Common grape vine
TIMOTHY SHEEHAN
10 August 2026
The variety has a moderately late ripening period. The berries are medium-sized, oval-shaped, and dark blue or violet-black in color with a waxy bloom. The plant is characterized by a long growing season and relatively late bud break, which increases its resistance to spring frosts.
Sangiovese is demanding in terms of growing conditions, preferring a warm, dry climate and limestone soils. The variety is prone to overproduction, which requires thinning, and is susceptible to grey mold. The grapes are used to create wines with aromas of cherry, plum, violet, and spices.
