The variety is a black wine grape historically associated with the Catalonia region. Genetic studies confirm its status as a unique object having links to other local varieties.

Currently, the variety is being actively studied by scientific institutes for the purposes of classification and evaluation of biological properties, including seed morphology and susceptibility to fungal diseases such as downy mildew and powdery mildew.
