The variety originated as a natural color mutation of the classic red Tempranillo. The changes affect the meristem layer responsible for anthocyanin synthesis in the skin, which gives the berries a gray color. Genetically and morphologically, the variety is practically identical to the original, although the berries and leaves may be slightly smaller in size.

Ripening characteristics are similar to Tempranillo, which is classified as an early-ripening variety. The variety's resistance also mirrors the properties of the parent species: it is susceptible to powdery mildew and Eutypa dieback, tolerates drought and wind poorly, but shows resistance to gray mold.

The variety is used in winemaking, most often in field blends or for the production of blended wines such as Clarete. Due to its rarity, it is also used by research organizations to study the mechanisms of grape genetic mutation.
