The variety is the result of a natural cross between the variety Ferral and an unknown parent. In agronomy, the variety is known for its sensitivity to frost, susceptibility to downy mildew and powdery mildew, as well as a tendency for flower/fruit drop. At the same time, the plant tolerates hot climatic conditions well.

The berries of the variety have a thick skin. Despite the potential ability to produce intensely colored wines with good structure, the variety is used primarily as a table grape and has no industrial importance in winemaking. The variety is known under a multitude of synonyms, including Imperial and Napoleon.
