The variety is autochthonous to northeastern Portugal and is cultivated in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. The vine forms five-to-seven-lobed leaves; clusters are medium to large in size and compact. The berries are large, oval in shape, and have a yellow-green color.
The variety demonstrates good yield performance and is resistant to spring frosts due to late bud burst. At the same time, it is characterized by low disease resistance and is especially sensitive to mites and fungal wood diseases.
Technical characteristics of the wines include pronounced acidity and an aromatic profile with notes of citrus, apples, peach, apricot, white flowers, and mineral shades. The thick skin of the berries with high polyphenol content can impart a slight bitterness, and the must is prone to rapid oxidation.
