The variety belongs to the species Vitis vinifera L. and is used exclusively for winemaking. Genetically, it is related to the Donzelinho tinto and Donzelinho branco varieties, sharing a common origin from the crossing of Cainho da Terra and Gouveio.
The variety name indicates the color of the berry skin, which has a purple or reddish hue. It is cultivated in the northeastern regions of Portugal, although it is often not included in the official lists of varieties recommended for PDO wine production in these regions.
