The variety has deep roots in Andalusian viticulture, presumably brought to the region about 3000 years ago. It is a plant with strong shoot growth, high yield and good drought tolerance. It belongs to the late maturity group.
The name of the variety reflects the golden hue of the berries when ripening in the sun. The flavor profile of wine from this grape is restrained and neutral, with light salty notes, moderate acidity and medium body. It is used primarily in blends or for distillation.
