The variety is autochthonous to the eastern Aegean islands and belongs to the species Vitis vinifera. It is intended exclusively for winemaking and is often used in blends to provide color and tannic structure to the wine.

The plant is late-maturing and well adapted to arid and hot conditions. The variety possesses high susceptibility to downy mildew, powdery mildew, and gray mold.

The berries are dark-colored with thick skin. The yield of the variety is characterized as good. The wines are distinguished by a specific phenolic profile with a high vanillin content, deep color, and pronounced tannins with moderate alcohol content.
