The variety is autochthonous to Galicia in Spain and the Minho region in Portugal. The crop is characterized by good drought tolerance, however, it is susceptible to downy mildew and Phomopsis viticola.
The variety is known by a number of synonyms, including Pedral, Alvarinho Tinto, Cainho, Pardal and Perna de Perdiz. Wines created from it are distinguished by their vibrant color.
