Kavčina, also known as Žametovka, Modra kavčina or Žametna črnina, is one of the oldest grape varieties in Slovenia. The variety belongs to the late maturity group and is characterized by high yield. Its bunches are large, branched and dense, with a weight of 400 to 700 grams, with large rounded blue-colored berries covered with waxy bloom and firm flesh.
The variety possesses high resistance to diseases and pests, but shows sensitivity to frost. Sugar accumulation is 14–17% with an acidity of 8–10‰. Wine from this variety is distinguished by its softness, fruity character and light red color; it is most often used as a component in blends of Slovenian wines.
The variety has historical significance as the carrier of the oldest fruit-bearing vine in the world, located in Maribor. It originates from the Dolenjska region, although the exact genetic origin of the variety has not yet been established.
