E.48 is not a separate variety in the botanical sense, but represents a selection clone of the Kékfrankos variety, also known by the names Blaufränkisch, Lemberger, and Frankovka. The breeding work for the selection of the clone was carried out at the Károly Eszterházy University Research Institute for Viticulture and Oenology in the city of Eger, Hungary.

The main biological and economic characteristics of the clone correspond to the mother variety. It is a mid-ripening wine grape variety with strong vine growth, medium-sized moderately dense clusters, and good winter hardiness. The produce is characterized by saturated color and aging potential, and the clone itself was selected to improve economically valuable traits under Hungarian conditions.
