The variety is autochthonous to Central Europe and formed historically, likely as a natural hybrid of the Sbulzina and Weißer Heunisch varieties. The vines have high vigor and require regular pruning and yield control. The variety is sensitive to frost and fungal diseases, such as downy mildew and powdery mildew, and also requires a relatively warm climate for full ripening.
The leaves are large, five-lobed with coarse serrations on the edges. The clusters are conical in shape, branched, and of medium density. The berries are round, dark blue or blue-black in color. Trellising and green operations are mandatory for the vines.
The variety is intended exclusively for winemaking. Its wines are characterized by aromas of cherry, blackberry, blueberry, plum, and spicy peppery notes. The variety is used both for creating varietal wines and as part of blends.
