The name Klävner has historically been applied in regions of Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and France to different varieties, including Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, and Traminer. Due to phonetic similarity, it is sometimes mistakenly confused with the separate variety Kerner, which is a hybrid of the Trollinger and Riesling varieties.
Since Klävner is not a single variety, there are no general morphological or agronomic traits for it. Harvest characteristics, ripening times, and disease resistance depend exclusively on which specific variety is concealed under this name in each individual case.
