The variety is one of the oldest, and its main purpose is drying to produce small seedless raisins. It is also used in winemaking for the production of sweet and fortified wines and is less frequently consumed fresh. The letter "N" in the name indicates the black color of the berries.
The vines are characterized by vigorous growth. The clusters are medium-sized, often cylindrical in shape. The berries are very small, round, and possess thin skin, a waxy bloom, and juicy, sweet flesh. The variety belongs to the first class of seedlessness.
The plant exhibits resistance to downy mildew, however, it is susceptible to powdery mildew and grey mold. Given the antiquity of the variety, there are numerous biotypes, which requires verification of characteristics when selecting a specific clone.
