The variety is a historical representative of folk selection, genetically related to the Sangiovese variety. The bush has pentagonal five-lobed leaves with weak dissection and a lyre-shaped open petiolar sinus; the underside of the leaf is covered with medium-density pubescence.
The clusters are medium-sized, conical or cylindrical-conical in shape, and compact. The berries are small, round, dark blue in color with a thick waxy bloom, thick skin, and neutral pulp flavor. The variety exhibits high adaptability to hot climates and clay soils, but demonstrates low resistance to fungal diseases and frosts.
A wine grape variety traditionally used in blends to provide color and structure to wines, as well as for the production of Marsala-type wines. It is characterized by the production of full-bodied wines with noticeable acidity and aromatic notes of dark berries, herbs, earth, and balsamic undertones.
