The variety is of ancient Greek origin and is widely distributed in the Mediterranean. In Hungary, particularly in the Tokaj region, it is traditionally used for creating blends, including Tokaji Aszú wines, as well as for the production of varietal wines ranging from dry to dessert.
The grapes ripen early, the clusters are small and compact, and the berries are small, round, with skin color ranging from pale yellow to golden. The variety has moderate growth vigor and is susceptible to Botrytis, which under certain conditions facilitates the production of premium dessert wines.
Products made from this variety are characterized by a high terpene content, which gives the wine a distinctive perfumed aroma with notes of jasmine, acacia, rose, citrus, pear, lychee, apricot, and honey.
