The variety belongs to the European species Vitis vinifera and is considered native to southwestern France or the Loire Valley. Its genetic ancestor is said to be the Savagnin variety.

The grapes possess high acidity and pronounced aromas of gooseberry, blackcurrant, citrus, and herbs. In the Czech Republic, this variety is actively cultivated and is one of the key varieties for the region.
