The German variety Saphira belongs to the PIWI group, obtained by crossing Arnsburger and Seyve-Villard 1-72. The maturity group is early-mid, the bushes have medium growth vigor, and lateral shoot formation is weak. The clusters are loose, medium-sized; the berries are round, waxy-yellow, with thick skin and juicy pulp. The variety is distinguished by high resistance to downy mildew, powdery mildew, and frost resistance down to -26°C. It is used for the production of white wines with fruity and honey notes; the sugar content of the juice is 21–24%.
The American table variety Sweet Sapphire is characterized by seedless berries of an elongated tubular shape, dark blue, almost black in color, with a characteristic dimple at the end. The variety has low resistance to grape diseases and moderate frost resistance, requiring winter covering.
