The variety is the result of a natural crossing of the varieties Marufo and Touriga Nacional, which emerged in the vineyards of the Douro region after the phylloxera epidemic. It belongs to rare varieties and often grows in old vineyards together with other traditional Portuguese varieties.

Wines made from this grape are distinguished by deep color, pronounced structure, and high pigment content; the aroma contains notes of dark berries and flowers. In the Vitis International Variety Catalogue (VIVC) database, the variety is registered under number 17359.
