The variety is an autochthonous cultivar of the Alentejo region, its origins linked to the Mourisco-Branco and Alfrocheiro-Preto varieties. The grapes are intended exclusively for winemaking and have been actively revived by Portuguese winemakers in recent years.

The plant is prone to vigorous green mass growth, which makes cluster light exposure management necessary. The variety is adapted to growing in conditions of heat and drought, with schist and granite soils being preferred.

Wines made from this variety possess pronounced acidity, tannins, and aromas of black berries, spices, and exotic woods. Modern characteristics of the beverages are noted as elegant and fresh, in contrast to historical assessments of the variety, which indicated low alcohol levels and light color.
