A variety of Mediterranean origin, also known by the synonyms Graciano, Morrastel, and Xeres. The plant has strong growth, but is characterized by low fertility and typically produces low yields. It prefers a warm climate and poor, stony soils, such as granite and slate.

The grapes are characterized by good drought tolerance. Wines made from it possess a rich structure, high content of phenolic compounds, and aromas of dark cherry, spices, violets, dried cranberry, and fresh herbs. It is used both for varietal wines and for creating blends.
