The variety is a wine grape of the species Vitis vinifera, previously known by the synonym Bastardo Espanhol. In the 18th century, it was considered one of the most important varieties in Portugal; however, its current plantings are limited, and the variety is preserved primarily in the Lisbon and Setúbal Peninsula regions.

The leaf is of medium size, pentagonal and five-lobed in shape, with slight channeling and pronounced blistering of the surface, and medium-density pubescence on the underside. The variety has a hermaphroditic flower, dense conical bunches, and elliptical dark blue berries with soft pulp.

The purpose of the variety is wine production. Due to the existence of historical synonyms and external resemblance to other varieties, such as Alfrocheiro or Trousseau Noir, the use of genetic markers is recommended for accurate identification.
