Variety description

The variety is an autochthon of the Douro region and is the product of a natural crossing of the Marufo and Touriga Nacional varieties. The vines have medium vigor; leaves are round, slightly or moderately lobed. Clusters are medium or large, cylindrical-conical in shape. Berries are medium, round, dark purple in color with juicy flesh.

The variety has high yields and is capable of accumulating up to 28% sugar. The plant is sensitive to drought, heat, and sunburn, and is also susceptible to major fungal grape diseases such as downy mildew, powdery mildew, and gray mold. Due to the berries' tendency to raisin, it is preferable to plant the variety on northern slopes.

The primary purpose is the production of red wines, most often in blends, as well as varietal wines in South Africa. Characteristic features of the wines are moderate tannins, intense color, and an aromatic profile including notes of blackberry, black cherry, and floral shades.
