Phytophthora root rot of sour cherry

A disease of sour cherry characterized by root and crown rot, caused by oomycetes of the genus Phytophthora.

The primary causal agent of Phytophthora root and crown rot in sour cherry is the oomycete Phytophthora cactorum. Pathogenicity to this crop has also been confirmed for the species Phytophthora cryptogea, Phytophthora citrophthora, Phytophthora citricola, and Phytophthora palmivora.

The disease is localized primarily in the root zone and root system, often beginning as a necrotic lesion at the graft union or crown. Destruction of the bark and damage to the vascular system of the tree manifest as yellowing of the leaves, wilting, stunted growth, and branch dieback, which leads to the death of the entire plant as the infection progresses.

The development of the disease is facilitated by excessive soil moisture and poor drainage. Specific intraspecific races of the pathogens or resistance genes to Phytophthora in sour cherry have not currently been classified.
